Frequently Asked Questions

The Essentials

  • Is the Chico Rescue Mission a homeless shelter?

No. We are a 12-month faith based residential rehabilitation program focused on long-term recovery and life transformation. We do not offer emergency overnight housing or "drop-in" services.

  • How much does the program cost?

Our program is provided at no cost to the individual. We believe that financial barriers should not stand in the way of a man’s restoration. The program is funded through the generous support of our local community and our vocational training tracks.

  • How long is the program?

We are a 12-month commitment. We believe this timeframe is necessary to build a spiritual foundation, develop career skills, and ensure a man is fully prepared for a successful, independent life.

Intake & Eligibility

  • Can I enter the program if I have an upcoming court date?

Yes. We frequently work with the courts and probation departments. We ask that you provide all legal documentation and case worker information during your intake interview so we can ensure we meet all reporting requirements.

  • Do you accept men on medication?

Yes, we do support necessary medical treatments; however, we prioritize a stable recovery environment and cannot allow specific medications such as Benzodiazepines or other highly addictive mind-altering substances. We aren't a medical facility, so the best approach is full honesty during your screening. This allows us to review your prescriptions and guide you on whether our program is the safest fit for your specific health needs.

  • What is the first step to joining the program?

The process begins with an intake interview. You can start this by filling out the "Get Help" form on our website or visiting our gate during business hours to speak with a staff member.

Daily Life & Rules

  • Can I have a cell phone or computer while in the program?

To help disciples focus entirely on their recovery and spiritual growth, personal cell phones and electronics are not permitted. Communication with family is handled through scheduled calls and supervised visits.

  • Do I have to be a Christian to join?

No, you do not have to be a Christian to enter. However, we are a Christ-centered program, and all residents are required to participate in our daily Bible studies and attend church services as part of their 12-month journey.

  • What is the "Career Skills" or "Vocational" phase?

After an initial period of stabilization, disciples move into a phase where they develop professional skills in our auto shop, detailing center, or landscaping crew. This is designed to eliminate "idle hands" and build the work ethic needed for employment after graduation.

Family & Connection

  • When can my family visit me?

We believe family reconciliation is vital. Visits are earned through progress in the program and are typically scheduled for weekends. All visits must be approved by staff in advance.

  • Can I leave the campus on weekends?

For the safety and accountability of all residents, the program is "closed campus." This means disciples remain on-site or with the group during church and vocational outings to maintain a focused recovery environment.

  • How can I send mail or a care package to a resident?

Mail can be sent to our main address on the Esplanade. We ask that all packages be limited to essentials like clothing or hygiene items, as all items are subject to inspection for the safety of the house.

Finding the Right Fit for Your Future

At the Chico Rescue Mission, we understand that starting a recovery journey is a major life decision and you likely want all the facts before jumping in. While there are other programs available, we are confident that our structured 12-month residential approach provides the most solid foundation for a total life change.

We certainly couldn’t list every answer here, and we understand you likely have many more specific questions. The best way to get those answered—and to truly see what we are talking about—is to come by and see the transformation in person. We invite you to set up a campus tour so you can meet our staff, see our facilities, and decide if this is the right place for your new beginning.
